Edward I was one of England's great warrior kings. He embodied the medieval ideal of kingship as a soldier, administrator and a man of faith. He accomplished many military feats during his reign including the conquest of Wales and Scotland (earning him the title "Hammer of the Scots") and participated in the Crusades. His shield features the 3 Lions of England, first used by King Richard the Lionheart and in use until the reign of Edward III when is was quartered with the fleurs de lys of France. It is hand painted and lacquered and features leather straps and padding on the back. Shields may vary slightly due to the hand painted nature of this item.
