Guidebook: Launceston Castle

PHOTO MISSING

The ruins of Launceston Castle dominate the town and are a reminder of the former power and authority of the Earls (later Dukes) of Cornwall. Built soon after the Norman Conquest, the castle gained its present form in the 13th century under Earl Richard of Cornwall. The castle later decayed and became militarily redundant, although up to 1840 its walls enclosed the county jail.
