Guidebook: Yarmouth Castle
Yarmouth Castle was part of the coastal defences of Henry VIII. When completed in 1547 it embodied the latest fashion in military engineering. It is square in plan and is washed on two sides by the sea. During the Civil War the Isle of Wight was strongly royalist and throughout the Commonwealth period Cromwell kept a large garrison here.
