Mah-jongg Hanging Lemur
Take home a souvenir of one of the quirkiest inhabitants of English Heritage’s newly restored Eltham Palace in London. Our lovable lemur is a soft toy version of Mah Jongg or Jongy, as he was affectionately named. He was the ring-tailed lemur owned by millionaire residents of the palace in the 1930s, Stephen and Virginia Courtauld. Bought from Harrods, he represented the Art Deco trend amongst the rich to own exotic pets. Awarded all the comforts of a family member, Jongy had his own fully-heated quarters on the first floor, complete with bamboo ladder. He appears in a mural in the billiard room, and wooden bosses in the Great Hall are carved into the shape of a sleeping lemur. Made exclusively for English Heritage, our cuddly Mah Jongg makes a lovely gift.
